A welcoming chapel and on-site crematorium

Our cozy non-denominational chapel seats 50 guests in traditional wooden pews. The funeral home team is well-versed in a wide variety of funeral customs and rites and is committed to honouring your family's personal preferences and traditions.

Cremation is important in certain religions and cultures, and more and more people are choosing cremation over more traditional burial options, but most people aren’t familiar with all of their choices when it comes to cremation. You may choose a direct cremation without a funeral or memorial service of any kind; a funeral with the body present, followed by cremation; or a cremation followed by a cemetery service or a celebration of life.

In response to the evolving needs of families, we offer an on-site crematorium with a cremation viewing area. This crematorium provides the peace of mind of knowing that your loved one never leaves our care.

Leave the cooking to us, too. Our professional catering service can handle anything from light appetizers and refreshments to a formal dinner with waiter service.

The cemetery

The cemetery at Vancouver Memorial Services and Crematorium is a beautiful place.

As you wander the cemetery grounds, you'll find many choices for memorializing cremated remains, including a Japanese niche wall, outdoor niche walls and the rose garden scattering area. Indoor columbaria have beautiful glass front-niches that can be personalized with photographs, flowers, mementos and keepsakes for a unique and lasting memorial.

History

Vancouver Memorial Services and Crematorium was established in 1912. It was the first crematorium built in Western Canada. The Vancouver Cremation Society constructed the facility within Mountain View Cemetery, Vancouver’s oldest cemetery, located at the corner of 41st Avenue and Fraser.

The crematorium was initially painted bright pink. Thanks to its art deco design and tradition of service to the community, the building was designated a Heritage Building in 1991.

After changing hands several times, the Vancouver crematorium was sold to the Simpson family in 1916, who operated it for more than 60 years. In the mid-1980s, the Simpsons sold the business. Today, Vancouver Memorial Services and Crematorium is a member of the Dignity Memorial® family.
